Setbacks are a part of life. We all experience them at some point, and it’s how we respond to them that truly defines our character.
I’ve had my fair share of setbacks, and I’d like to share my personal journey of facing them in 4 simple steps that have helped me overcome adversity and keep moving forward.

Step 1: Acknowledge Your Feelings
In the 2nd wave of covid period, I was interviewed by various companies for the post of Full-Stack developer. I had invested time, energy, and my heart into it, but in the end, I didn’t get the position. I was devastated.
During those times I felt like I had let myself down and that I wasn’t good enough. At this moment, I realized that it’s essential to acknowledge your feelings.
When you face a setback, it’s entirely natural to feel disappointed, frustrated and even sad. Allow yourself to experience these emotions. Suppressing them can have a negative effect in the long run.
By acknowledging your feelings, you give yourself permission to heal and move on.
Step 2: Learn from Your Setback
After attending around 20+ interviews, I decided to take a step back and analyse the situation. I realized that although I didn’t get the job, the experience had taught me valuable lessons. I gained new skills and insights that could benefit me in the future. This brings us to the second step: learning from your setback.
Every setback is an opportunity for growth. Analyze what went wrong and what you can do differently next time. Embrace the lessons learned, and you’ll emerge from the setback stronger and wiser than before.
Step 3: Self-Motivation
During my setback, I used the setbacks as a source of fuel to reignite my determination. Self-motivation is the third crucial step in facing setbacks.
While external support can be valuable, it’s essential to cultivate self-motivation and the inner drive to keep going.
Remind yourself of your goals and dreams and use the setback as an opportunity to prove your resilience and determination.
Step 4: Set New Goals
After acknowledging my feelings, learning from the setback, and relying on self-motivation, I was ready to set new goals.
I revised my career plan and established fresh objectives that incorporated the lessons I’d learned. This step is vital to propel yourself forward.
Setbacks may temporarily divert your path, but they don’t define your future. By setting new goals and working towards them with self-motivation, you regain a sense of purpose and direction. It’s the final step in overcoming setbacks and emerging from them with renewed determination.
After facing all the setbacks and following these 4 steps, I cracked my 25th interview and the next 4 interviews and had 5 offer letters.
I would say setbacks are an inevitable part of life, and we must embrace them as opportunities for growth.
My personal journey has shown me that setbacks don’t mean the end of the road, they are simply an obstacle on the path to success. Embrace them, learn from them, and keep moving forward. In doing so, you’ll find that you have the strength to overcome any setback that comes your way.
I wish you all Success!!!!
